The Winter Program will start January 9 – 12, 2008.
This Week and Last Week's News From The Farms
We apologize for the delay of last week's newsletter. This is a combined newsletter for Fall Season Weeks 10 and 11.
We experienced a severe computer melt down due to our good friends at Microsoft encouraging us to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7. Once we loaded this program, we were locked out of our computer and had to do a complete system restore, taking hours to reinstall and fine tune all our settings.
Now that our computer is back to normal, we are backing all our settings up on several different types of media, to ensure we do not have to endure such a painstaking ordeal again. We highly recommend you do the same, if you haven't already done so.
We hope everyone had a happy holiday. A number of members have commented on how much they enjoyed the nice greens at Thanksgiving. Many of the fall crops got off to a late start this year, due to the drought. We give much thanks to Mother Nature's recent rain that has given many of our crops the boost they needed. We will be including more greens for the remainder of the Fall Program. Emmitt Snead continues to harvest green tomatoes from his high tunnel greenhouses, that many members are enjoying as they slowly ripen.
We are also hoping to harvest some baby carrots and Jerusalem artichokes (also known as Sunchokes) next week.
In other news, preparations and much planting has been underway for the 2008 Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall programs. We will also be updating the website with new features such as Seasonal Harvest Projections, and Crop Reports, more recipes, and the 2008 Windows to the Farms slideshows. Speaking of 2008, January is just around the corner, and arrangements have already been made with our growers in Florida to provide the start of the Winter Program with organic citrus and tomatoes, as well as some of the winter crops we are growing here in Virginia.
So, if you have not yet signed up for 2008, please do so as it will help us to get organized a bit earlier. Thank you for your belief in Community Supported Agriculture.
In Your Produce Basket This Week Dec. 5 - 8
Kale, Tomatoes, Turnips with Greens, Free-Range Eggs, Cilantro
See your site's distribution list for more details.
Please Note: With elements beyond our control such as the start or the end of a harvest, or extreme weather conditions that may limit the quantity of produce coming in, we systematically address each delivery and pick up group each week and do our very best to see that everyone receives some of everything.
Recipes
Because of last week's computer problems, we did not have the opportunity to send you recipes for lemon grass that was included in last week's share. On the web, www.epicurious.com has several recipes for lemon grass.
Turnips and Mixed Greens
1 Bunch Purple Top Turnips
1 Bag Kale or other Greens
3 Anchovy Filets
1 Tbs. Olive Oil
1 Tbs. Thai Fish Sauce
1 cup water
1/8 tsp. Cayenne powder, optional
Salt and pepper to taste
Wash the turnips and greens thoroughly. Chop turnip greens and kale (or other greens) into 1 inch pieces. Slice turnips finely. Preheat anchovy filets, olive oil, fish sauce, water, and optional cayenne powder in large pot, just until steaming. Put the turnips and greens into the pot and give it a good stir with a big spoon. Heat until simmering, then simmer for 1 hour. Add salt and pepper to taste.
